This clever piece of equipment can ‘map’ internal decay in trees by measuring the velocity of sound waves passing through the tree – the greater the decay, the slower the waves travel. A number of sensors are attached to the trunk at regular intervals and pick up the sound waves produced by tapping at one location at a time in sequence. A computer then assimilates the data to produce a two dimensional image. One of the major advantages of this equipment is that it avoids the need to drill into a tree, which can in itself result in damage.

The sonic tomogram allows a ‘scan’ to be taken through the tree stem. This allows the experienced  user to determine the structural safety of the tree in relation to changed wood.
